Before you can take advantage of the Junk Email filtering system on a mailbox, it must be enabled in the Account Control Center. For instructions on this, please read the article Junk Email Filtering Overview.
After enabling Junk Email filtering on a mailbox, your email client must be configured to recognize flagged messages. Instructions for configuring common email readers are included below.

- Outlook (Version 2000/2002)

- Netscape Messenger (version 4.79)
- Mac OS X's Mail
- Mozilla Mail (Version 1.2)
- Eudora 5.2
- Pine
SquirrelMail
- First, create a folder to hold junk email
- Select Folders from the top menu
- Under Create Folder, type a folder name (for example, "Junk")
and select Create
- Second, create a rule to move junk email into that folder.
- Select Options from the top menu
- Select Message Filters
- Beside What to scan, select Only Unread Messages
- Select Save
- Select New
- For Match, select Header
- In the text box, type the following:
X-Spam-Flag: YES - For Move to, select the folder you created for junk email
Outlook (versions 2000 and 2002)
- First, create a folder to hold junk email.
- From the File menu, select Folder
- Select New Folder
- Enter the name of your folder (for example, Junk)
- In the Folder contains section,
select Mail Items (for Outlook 2000),
or Mail and Post Items (for Outlook 2002) - For Select where to place this folder, highlight the Inbox
- Select OK
- If you are asked about setting a shortcut, select No
- Second, create a rule to move junk email into that folder.
- From the Tools menu, select Rules Wizard
- Select New
- In Outlook 2002 only, select Start from a blank rule
- For the type of rule, select Check messages when they arrive
- Select Next
- For Which condition(s) do you want to check, mark the
with specific words in the message header box. - In the Rule description section, select the link labeled
specific words - In the Search Text field, type the following:
X-Spam-Flag: YES - Select OK
- Select Next
- In the What do you want to do with the message section,
mark the move it to the specified folder box. - In the Rule description section, select the link labeled
specified - Select the folder you created for junk email.
- If you are asked about setting a shortcut, select No
- Select OK
- Select Finish
- Select OK
Outlook Express (version 6.0)
Outlook Express requires a modified Subject field in flagged messages.
This setting is found in the Junk E-Mail Filter Settings. For the setting
"E-Mail Subject", mark the box "Modify Subject to include **JUNK**".

- First, create a folder to hold junk email.
- From the File menu, select New
- Select Folder
- Enter the name of your folder (for example, Junk). Highlight
Inbox as the location in which to create this new folder - Select OK
- Second, create a rule to move junk email into that folder.
- From the Tools menu, select Message Rules
- Select Mail. If you have never created message rules before,
the New Mail Rule window will automatically appear. Otherwise, select
New to add a new mail rule. - In the Select the Conditions for your rule section, mark the box:
Where the Subject line contains specific words - In the Select the Actions for your rule section, mark the box:
Move it to the specified folder - In the Rule Description section, select the link labeled
contains specific words - For the text field, type the following:
**JUNK** - Select Add
- Select OK
- In the Rule Description section, select the link labeled
specified - Under Inbox, select the folder you created for junk email.
- Select OK
- For the name of the rule, type Junk
- Select OK
- Select Apply Now
- Doublecheck that the rule you created ("Junk") is highlighted,
and also that Inbox is listed in the Apply to folder field - Select Apply Now. If a confirmation box pops up, select OK
- Select Close
- Select OK
Netscape Messenger 4.79
- You will first need to create a folder to hold your junk email
- Go to the File menu
- Choose New Subfolder
- Enter the name of the new folder ("Junk" for instance)
We suggest that you create the new folder as a subfolder of your Inbox - Click OK
- Click OK again
- Now, you will create a rule to move junk email into your folder
- Go to the Edit menu
- Choose Message Filters
- Choose New
- For the Filter Name, choose something like Junk
- Choose the Match any of the following option
- In the leftmost drop-down box (it should say "sender"), choose
Customize Headers - Choose New
- In the Custom Header text-box, type in: X-Spam-Flag
- Choose OK
- Choose OK once again
- Make sure that the leftmost drop-down box says X-Spam-Flag
- Make sure that the drop-down box on the right side says contains
- In the text-box to the right of contains, enter in: YES
- Under the Filter action settings, choose the Move to folder option
- Choose the folder that you created in step 1 from the list of folders
- The Description setting is optional (you can just leave it blank)
- Click OK
Mac OS X's Mail
- You will first need to create a folder to hold your junk email
- Go to the Mailbox menu
- Choose New Mailbox
- Make sure your mail account is listed by Location
- Enter in the name of the new folder (Junk for instance)
- Click OK
- Now, you will create a rule to move junk email into your folder
- Go to the Mail (main) menu
- Select Preferences
- Click on the Rules icon
- Click Add Rule
- For Description, type something like Junk E-Mail Filter
- In the select box for conditions, select all
- In the select box that shows from, select edit header list
- For header, type X-Spam-Flag
- Click OK
- Now, select X-Spam-Flag from the select box that shows from
- Next to it, select is equal to and enter YES in the text box
- Below that, select Transfer Message and next to it the name of
the folder you created - Click OK
Mozilla Mail 1.2
- You will first need to create a folder to hold your junk email
- Go to the File menu
- Choose New
- Choose Folder
- Enter the name of the new folder ("Junk" for instance)
We suggest that you create the new folder as a subfolder of your Inbox - Click OK
- Now, you will create a rule to move junk email into your folder
- Go to the Tools menu
- Choose Message Filters
- Choose New
- For the Filter Name, choose something like Junk
- Choose the "Match any of the following" option
- In the leftmost drop-down box (it should say "sender"), choose
Customize - In the New Message Header text-box, type in: X-Spam-Flag
- Choose Add
- Choose OK
- In the left drop-down box (which should say "Subject") choose
"X-Spam-Flag" - Make sure that the drop-down box on the right side says contains
- In the text-box to the right of contains, enter in: YES
- Under the Perform This Action settings, choose the Move to folder
option - Choose the folder that you created in step 1 from the list of folders
- The Description setting is optional (you can just leave it blank)
- Click OK
- Click OK again
Eudora 5.2
- You will first need to create a folder to hold your junk email
- Go to the Mailbox menu
- Select New
- Enter the name of the new folder ("Junk" for instance)
- Do not click the make a folder checkbox
- Click OK
- Now, you will create a rule to move junk email into your folder
- Go to the Tools menu in Windows, or the "Window" menu in Mac OS X
- Select Filters
- Click New
- In the Match section, click the box next to incoming
- In the Header text box, type "X-Spam-Flag:"
- In the text box below, type YES
- In the Actions section, select Transfer To
- Select the folder you created in step 1
- Click OK
Pine
- You can create both a folder for junk email and the filter rule in
one process- Type S for setup
- Type R for rules, then F for Filters
- Type A for Add
- Hit enter, and type a name for this rule (perhaps "Junk Email
Filtering") - Arrow down a line or two past the line that reads
"FILTERED MESSAGE CONDITIONS BEGIN HERE" - Hit X to enter a custom header, then type X-Spam-Flag
- Arrow to the "X-Spam-Flag pattern" line that appeared, hit
enter and type YES - Arrow down below "Message is New?" to the line that reads Yes,
and hit enter - Arrow down below Filter Action to the line just below Move
that says Folder List - Hit enter and type in the name of the folder junk email should be
moved to - Hit E to Exit
- Hit Y to save when prompted
- Hit E again to exit setup
